TIMER

Below are some important factors to consider when you are Timer:

1.         Locate the timing cards so that Speakers at the lectern can see the cards easily.

2.         Be sure you know how the timing cards work. This is essential. The tools necessary are: a watch with second hand, timing lights (or colored cue cards), and a means of recording the actual times spoken for each speech, table topic and evaluation. You will be asked to report whether the table topic candidates, speakers and evaluators have qualified after each section of the meeting.

The normal timing criteria is:

SPEECHES: 5-7 minutes

                                                Speaker qualifies at 4:30 minutes

                                                Green light at 5 minutes

                                                Yellow light at 6 minutes

Red light at 7 minutes (leave light on)

                                                Disqualifies at 7:31 minutes

EVALUATIONS: 2-3 minutes

                                                Evaluator qualifies at 1:30 minutes

                                                Green light at 2 minutes

                                                Yellow light at 2:30 minutes

Red light at 3:00 minutes (leave light on)

                                                Disqualifies at 3:31 minutes

TABLE TOPICS: 1-2 minutes

                                                Green light at 60 seconds

                                                Yellow light at 1:30 minutes

Red light at 2:00 minutes (leave light on)

                                                Disqualifies at 2:31 minutes

3.         Record times spoken for each person timed.

4.         Report times verbally when so directed by the General Evaluator. The appropriate way in which to report those that qualified versus those that did not is to only mention those that did qualify. You don’t have to call attention to those who did not qualify; the audience will figure it out for themselves.
